The wisdom we carry, why former student leaders must come back for those still in the trenches

There is a generation of students navigating university life without a roadmap. You have the map. Will you share it?

South Africa produces brilliant students every year. Many of them will never reach their potential, not because they lack ability, but because nobody showed them the way. One figures things out on one’s own, sometimes through a helpful senior student, sometimes through a painful mistake, and sometimes far too late. The opportunities, the bursaries, the networks, the unspoken rules of how to prepare for the job market, most students only stumble upon these things by accident, if at all.

That accidental discovery is a luxury that poor and first-generation students simply cannot afford. SASSFE believes the doors of learning must be opened not just financially, but practically. SASSFE raises funds to support students who deserve a seat at the table. But getting a seat is only half the battle. Knowing how to use it is the other half. And that knowledge, more often than not, lives in the minds and memories of those who have already been through it.

The gap is not just about money. It is about information, about the opportunities that prepare you for the job market, the ones that current students do not even know exist. This is not a new idea. Every generation of student leaders carries with it hard-won lessons: how to navigate NSFAS appeals, how to approach a professor, which programmes and platforms genuinely open doors, and how to survive the transition from campus life to the working world. But too often, that knowledge walks out of the campus gates and never finds its way back. We are calling for something different. We are calling for a bridge, a deliberate and ongoing conversation between former student leaders and the students who are standing exactly where you once stood.

Think about what you wish someone had told you. Think about the mentor you needed but never had. Now imagine being that person for someone who is navigating the same uncertainty today, with even fewer resources and even higher stakes. This is not about grand gestures. It is about showing up, sharing your story, your contacts, your lessons and your time. It is about intergenerational solidarity that goes beyond nostalgia and becomes something genuinely useful.

SASSFE is building a platform to make this happen. We want to connect alumni who are willing to give back with current students who are hungry for guidance. Whether it is career advice, academic navigation, or simply having someone in your corner who has been through it, this matters more than most of us realise.

The question is not whether you have something to offer. You do. The question is whether you are willing to offer it. If the answer is yes, we are ready to connect you.

CALL FOR ALUMNI MENTORS

Are you a former student leader? SASSFE is building a network of alumni mentors who are willing to offer guidance, share opportunities and support current students as they navigate university life and the transition into the working world. No formal commitment required, just a willingness to show up and give back.
